Glossary of Golf Terms

A

Ace : Hole in one. A shot that allows the ball to go directly into the hole from the tee.

Address : The player's position when he is about to hit the ball .

Approach: A shot intended to send the ball onto the green.

Apron : The grass border is shorter around the green, but longer than the green itself.

B

Backspin : Spin applied to the ball to make it roll backwards after landing.

Ball Marker : A small object used to mark the position of the ball on the green.

Ball Striking : The quality of the contact between the ball and the club

Bent Grass : A type of grass often used on greens due to its fine texture and density. 

Birdie : Score of one stroke under par on a hole.

C

Caddie: A person who carries the player's clubs and provides advice.  

Carry : The distance the ball travels through the air.

Chipping : A short, low shot intended to land on the green and roll towards the hole.

Clubface : The part of the club that strikes the ball.

D

Divot : A piece of turf that is cut out when the club strikes the ground.

Dogleg : A hole with a sharp bend in the fairway.

Double Bogey : A score of two over par for a hole

Drive : A shot played from the tee with a driver.

E

Eagle : A score of two under par for a hole.

Etiquette : The rules of conduct and respect on the course.

F

​​​Fairway : The well-maintained area between the tee and the green.

Fade : A shot that curves slightly from left to right for a right-handed player.

Fore : A warning shout to alert others of a ball heading towards them.

​​​Green : The area around the hole with very short grass. 

Grain : Direction in which the grass grows on the green, influencing the trajectory of the ball. 

 Grip : The way a player holds the club. 

H

​​​Handicap : A system of scoring that allows players of different abilities to compete fairly. 

Hole-in-One : See "Ace".

Hook : A shot that curves sharply from right to left for a right-handed player.

I

Impact : Moment when the club makes contact with the ball.

Interlocking grip : Grip where the fingers of the right hand and the left hand intertwine.

​​​Iron : A type of club with a metal head, used for precision shots. 

J

Jigger : Club mainly used for putting shots or for getting out of light rough (a less common term today)

K

​​​Knockdown Shot : A low-flying shot with less loft, used to combat the wind.

L

​​​Lag : A long putt intended to get the ball close to the hole without necessarily holing it.

Lie : The position of the ball on the ground. 

Links : Type of course located by the sea, characterised by undulating terrain and few trees.

Loft : The angle of the clubface that affects the trajectory of the ball.

M

​​​Match Play : A form of competition where each hole is a separate contest.. 

Mulligan : An informal extra stroke allowed after a poor shot, usually on the first tee

O

​​​Out-of-Bounds : An area outside the course boundaries where play is not allowed.

P

​​​Pace : The speed of the ball or the green. 

Par : The standard number of strokes set for a hole.

Pitch : A short, high shot intended to land softly on the green.

Putter : A club used mainly on the green.

R

​​​Rough : The area around the fairway with taller and denser grass. 

Rookie : Golfer who is starting in a professional competition.

S

​​​Sand Trap : See "Bunker". 

Scramble : A team format where all players hit from the location of the best shot.

Shank : A mishit where the ball strikes the hosel of the club.

Slice : A shot that curves sharply from left to right for a right-handed player. 

Stableford : Point system where each stroke earns a certain number of points based on the score relative to par.

Stroke Play : A form of competition where the total score for all holes is counted.

T

​​​Tee : A small stand used to elevate the ball on the first stroke of each hole.

Top : A shot where the ball is struck above its center, causing a low, rolling trajectory.

U

Unplayable lie : Situation where the ball is unplayable, the player taking a penalty to free themselves.

​​​Up-and-Down : Saving par by getting the ball into the hole in two strokes from off the green. 

V

Vardon grip : Grip of the club where the little finger of the right hand rests on the index finger of the left hand.

Victory lap  : Ball that spins around the hole before falling inside.

W

​​​Wedge : A club used for short, high shots.

Whiff : Missing the ball completely during a swing.
